Our Expertise

Specialist Expertise for Complex Disability

Supportability specialises in acquired disability and complex support environments.

Our expertise extends beyond understanding the NDIS. We understand how disability can interact with health, rehabilitation, housing, behaviour, mental health, relationships, decision-making and other systems.

This enables us to work particularly effectively where circumstances are complex, changing or difficult to coordinate.

Acquired Brain Injury

Brain injury can affect much more than physical function.

Changes in cognition, memory, communication, executive functioning, insight, behaviour and emotional regulation can significantly affect how a person engages with services and manages their supports.

Our acquired-disability foundations provide our team with an understanding of these complexities and their practical implications for Support Coordination.

Spinal Cord Injury & Complex Physical Disability

People living with spinal cord injury or complex physical disability may require coordination across personal support, nursing, allied health, assistive technology, equipment, home modifications, accommodation and health services.

We understand how these different elements interact and the importance of establishing a coordinated support environment around the person.

Neurological & Catastrophic Disability

Our experience includes people living with stroke, neurological conditions and other significant acquired disabilities.

We recognise the interaction between physical, cognitive, psychological, social and environmental factors and the importance of multidisciplinary approaches to complex disability.

Hospital Discharge & Community Transition

Leaving hospital or rehabilitation can be one of the most complex periods in a person’s disability journey.

A successful transition may depend on accommodation, equipment, personal support, nursing, allied health, transport, funding and provider arrangements being established at the same time.

We work across these interfaces to help establish coordinated and sustainable transitions into the community.

Accommodation & Complex Living

We have experience navigating complex accommodation and living arrangements including:

  • Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)
  • Supported Independent Living (SIL)
  • Medium Term Accommodation (MTA)
  • individualised living arrangements
  • housing transitions
  • provider changes
  • accommodation breakdown
  • home modifications.

Our focus is not simply finding a vacancy. It is helping establish an arrangement that is appropriate and sustainable for the individual.

Behavioural & Psychosocial Complexity

We work with participants whose disability support needs intersect with behaviours of concern, Positive Behaviour Support, restrictive practices, mental health, psychosocial disability or complex trauma.

Our role is to help the different services surrounding the participant work together and support the implementation of consistent approaches.

Decision-Making, Capacity & Guardianship

Some participants require additional assistance to understand information, consider options, communicate preferences or participate in decisions.

There may also be family members, nominees, guardians, administrators, advocates or statutory agencies involved.

Our approach promotes supported decision-making and the participant’s voice while effectively navigating formal decision-making arrangements.

Safeguarding & Complex Risk

We have experience working where there is:

  • vulnerability or exploitation risk
  • service instability
  • provider breakdown
  • accommodation instability
  • behavioural escalation
  • restrictive practices
  • family or support-network complexity
  • significant health or safety concerns.

Our focus is on recognising emerging problems, coordinating appropriate responses and strengthening the support environment around the participant.

Complex Systems Navigation

Some of the greatest challenges arise when a participant’s needs cross multiple systems.

Our team has experience working across disability, health, rehabilitation, housing, mental health, guardianship and other government and community services.

We help participants and their support networks understand these systems, identify responsibilities, address gaps and bring the right people together.
